Psalm 61:1-5
God, hear my cry;
pay attention to my prayer.
I call to you from the ends of the earth
when my heart is without strength.
Lead me to a rock that is high above me,
for you have been a refuge for me,
a strong tower in the face of the enemy.
I will dwell in your tent forever and take refuge under the shelter of your wings.
Selah
God, you have heard my vows;
you have given a heritage to those who fear your name. (CSB)

bend an ear to my prayer.
When I’m far from anywhere,
down to my last gasp,
I call out, “Guide me
up High Rock Mountain!”
You’ve always given me breathing room,
a place to get away from it all,
A lifetime pass to your safe-house,
an open invitation as your guest.
You’ve always taken me seriously, God,
made me welcome among those who know and love you. (MSG)

Where does God lead us? First, last, and always to himself. Every step of faith is taken in his presence. Every journey leads to his home.
My colleague and I yawned a lot yesterday. We led a retreat Monday through Wednesday, arriving home Wednesday evening at about dinnertime. The night was too short to recover from three days on our feet teaching and training. Unfortunately for me, I got my second wind around the time my bride went to bed last night. Two hours of productivity and only one additional hour at the other end of my rest means I might be yawning again today.
I will reset my rhythms and routines today and tonight.
God has faithfully guided me into habits of obedient agreement regarding working from a place of rest rather than resting from my work. Fatigue is a threat to our well-being as it surely is a prowler in our backyard.
While I was being productive last night, our dog who does not bark unless absolutely necessary, barked suddenly and loudly.
Fortunately, we have security cameras. Checking them and finding nothing worth fearing out there, I assume the Tiny Dog next door had taken his evening constitutional before bedtime and yapped to see if our dogs wanted to get in some last-minute exercise running up and down the fence.
The word Selah in the psalm above basically means, Pause. This is probably where King David created the prototype of today’s guitar solo. He strummed and hummed and prepared his voice for the big finish.
It’s okay to pause in your prayer. Muttering useless phrases to fill the silence is much less helpful than strumming and humming. Quiet speaks quite loudly sometimes. Many of the best prayers ever prayed had no words.
Where do you need God to lead you today?
He will lead you all the way.
He will hear all you say.
He will calm your fears today.

I will pray and trust God to reset my way.

Our Father, here I am, ready for a reset. Here I am, ready to begin again more intelligently. Empower me to live fully, faithfully, and restfully today. Amen.
