Acts 18:24-26  Meanwhile, a Jew named Apollos, an eloquent speaker who knew the Scriptures well, had arrived in Ephesus from Alexandria in Egypt. He had been taught the way of the Lord, and he taught others about Jesus with an enthusiastic spirit and with accuracy. However, he knew only about John’s baptism. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him preaching boldly in the synagogue, they took him aside and explained the way of God even more accurately. (NLT)

Three life lessons are in play in the story of Apollos:
1. Get out of God’s way.
2. Stay out of God’s way.
3. Join God on The Way.

Apollos “had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor,” (NIV). He was eloquent and powerful in his communication skills. He was also a wee bit ignorant. He did not understand what came after John the Baptist’s call to repentance and baptism. He was the kind of man who would want to know more. Priscilla and Aquila “took him aside and explained the way of God even more accurately.

Apollos passed the first two tests. He got out of God’s way and stayed out of his way by learning more about The Way. Apollos was a learner. The best teachers are the best learners. Keep reading about Apollos and learn how much more fruitful and effective he became as he mastered the additional truths had missed to this point. We can safely say Apollos joined God on The Way.

What do you need to know to move you into a deeper, more abiding walk with God? What do you need to know to live a more fruitful and effective life aligned and attuned with the will and ways of God?

Rick Warren likes to say “We are all ignorant, just on different subjects.” Ignorance is a removable barrier.

What do you need to know? This is the question of essentialism.

What do you want to know? This is the question of curiosity.

What do you choose to know that has no vital meaning? This is the question of trivia.

Trivia helps you win games.

Curiosity helps you win projects.

Essentialism helps you win life.

Asking God to show you the way each day should include teachability. These questions prove helpful for those who have a heart for learning and teaching like Apollos:
1. What do I need to know before I go?
2. What do I need to know as I go?
3. What do I need to know as I reflect on where I have gone and what I have done?

Experience is not the best teacher. Information is not the best teacher. Teachers are not the best teachers. Reflection on experiences lived, information gained, and wise instruction received is the best teacher.

Joining God in The Way today involves using all the brains you have and all you can borrow. Use what you know and accumulate as you go.

I will ask God to increase my knowledge and wisdom, and deepen and broaden my experience of his grace and mercy.

Our Father, what do you want me to know? What do you want me to experience? What do you want to help others learn and experience? Guide me and teach me. I open my heart and mind to you and all you want for me. Amen.

Daily D – Deuteronomy 30:19-20

Deuteronomy 30:19, 20 “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 29:29

Deuteronomy 29:29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 26:16-19

Deuteronomy 26:16-19 “The Lord your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to him, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws—that you will listen to him. And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. He has declared that he will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations he has made and that you will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he promised.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 23:4-5

Deuteronomy 23:4, 5 “For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim to pronounce a curse on you. However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 17:16-20

Deuteronomy 17:16-20 The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the Lord has told you, “You are not to go back that way again.” He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.

When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. It is to be with him, and **he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left.** Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.
