Matthew 1:24  When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. (NLT)

Matthew 2:13, 14  After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! Flee to Egypt with the child and his mother,” the angel said. “Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother, . . . (NLT)

Matthew 2:21  So Joseph got up and returned to the land of Israel with Jesus and his mother. (NLT)

Quiet obedience beats noisy exclamation every time.

There are people who live their whole lives in relative obscurity. They are content remaining on the sidelines and in the shadows. Their thoughts and feelings are not on display. They simply do the right thing the right way for the right reason in the right timing day in, day out, over the full arc of their lives.

When they are laid to rest, many realize the full meaning of the word Loss. Something goes missing that is unretrievable. Something is gone that performed much like glue. Something gone now leaves a vacancy, a vacuum, that will be filled, but with what?

Joseph is notable for an obedient life. He did what God said and he did it immediately. He saved his family because he did what he was supposed to do. He did it in God’s perfect timing. He did it silently. And so was saved the Savior and our Savior’s mother.

Quiet obedience can save a life, save a family, save a world.

In a world where everyone shouts, it is the silent majority, those who live lives of quiet obedience, who make the world go ‘round. It is the quiet ones in the shadows who hold things together. It is quiet obedience that builds better lives, better homes, better communities.

Pity a world that does not celebrate quiet obedience.

It’s a good day to show up, shut up, and stand up to lead the way in obedience to something more important than ourselves.

I will live a life of quiet obedience.

Our Father, thank you for a father who lived like Joseph. Thank you for men and women who do not shout or strut but instead do the next right thing, no matter how hard, again and again. Thank you for these silent saints who join you in building a better world so that those who follow behind them have a place to stand. Amen.

Psalm 141:3, 4
“Take control of what I say, O LORD,
and guard my lips.
Don’t let me drift toward evil
or take part in acts of wickedness.
Don’t let me share in the delicacies
of those who do wrong.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 32:38-41

Jeremiah 32:38-41 “They will be my people, and I will be their God. And I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship me forever, for their own good and for the good of all their descendants. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good for them. I will put a desire in their hearts to worship me, and they will never leave me. I will find joy doing good for them and will faithfully and wholeheartedly replant them in this land.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 29:11-14

Jeremiah 29:11-14 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. I will be found by you,” says the Lord. “I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and will bring you home again to your own land.”

Daily D – Psalm 138:1-3

Psalm 138:1-3
“I give you thanks, O LORD, with all my heart;
I will sing your praises before the gods.
I bow before your holy Temple as I worship.
I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness;
for your promises are backed by all the honor of your name.
As soon as I pray, you answer me;
you encourage me by giving me strength.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 23:18

Jeremiah 23:18 “Have any of these prophets been in the Lord’s presence to hear what he is really saying? Has even one of them cared enough to listen?”
