Luke 11:31, 32
“The queen of Sheba will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here—but you refuse to listen. The people of Nineveh will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here—but you refuse to repent.” (NLT)

“On Judgment Day the Ninevites will stand up and give evidence that will condemn this generation, because when Jonah preached to them they changed their lives. A far greater preacher than Jonah is here, and you squabble about ‘proofs.’ On Judgment Day the Queen of Sheba will come forward and bring evidence that condemns this generation, because she traveled from a far corner of the earth to listen to wise Solomon. Wisdom far greater than Solomon’s is right in front of you, and you quibble over ‘evidence.’” (MSG)

Some stories delight people from generation to generation. They capture attention. They bear wisdom. They send minds on fantastic journeys.

When stories like these linger long in popular imagination, it can be hard to hear new truth greater than what has been celebrated so long. New truth feels threatening somehow.

Jesus, Immanuel, God with Us, stood among his people. They were more interested in remembering yesterday’s tales of glory than seeing the Glorious One before them. A greater story than Solomon and the Queen of Sheba was playing out before them. A greater story than Jonah the Submariner and Pouting Preacher was fully displayed in living color, and people responded indifferently.

Well-worn grooves resist attempts to refill them.

Blind eyes fluttered open. Withered hands grasped tools. A dead son and daughter were restored to life. Miracle bread fed thousands upon thousands more than once. Storms were silenced. Water was walked on. Lepers were healed. Words of truth and life were changing hearts and minds. And yet the people preferred their old, old stories to the one this demoncaster was living among them.

A Greater Preacher than Jonah, a Greater Wise Man than Solomon spoke words of truth and life, and those words fell on deaf ears.

The question is, are we listening, really listening? Are we learning, really learning? Are we responding with changed lives?

Greater than any story ever told, Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We dare not miss this Good News. We dare not let this Good News become another old story of song and lore. This is the story Greater Than any other. This is the Greater Than Savior the whole world needs.

I will tell the story of Jesus who is Greater Than.

Our Father, thank you for giving us a story Greater Than all other stories. Thank you for giving us life Greater Than every other lifestyle. Thank you for giving us truth Greater Than any words confidently declared in classrooms and speaker’s podiums. Thank you for your Son our Savior who is Greater Than all, everything, and anything to come. Amen.

Daily D – 2 Peter 1:5-8

2 Peter 1:5-8 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with godliness, godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being useless or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

You will keep the mind that is dependent on you in perfect peace,
for it is trusting in you.

because in the LORD, the LORD himself,
is an everlasting rock!
