Psalm 40:1-3  “I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord.” (NLT)

Sometimes waiting is more of a testimony of trust in God than vigorous activity. Waiting is by definition longer than a momentary pause. Waiting on God is more than being still and silent. It involves leaning in to listen. It trusts that God will speak, will provide direction, and will supply what we need when we need it.

In the movie Silverado, Kevin Costner’s character Jake is broken out of jail. He and Kevin Kline’s character Paden have a brief conversation:

“What do we do now?” Paden asks.

“We wait,” Jake replies.

There is a momentary pause before Jake then says, “Let’s go.”

That’s how many people wait. Momentary pauses slow us, but don’t stop us long enough to listen.

Momentary pauses arrest activity, but do not stop us long enough for God to tell us what to do next.

Momentary pauses produce silence, but invite unnecessary conversation.

Momentary pauses provide time to look for necessary resources, but take what is at hand rather than seeking what only God can provide.

This is a perfect mixture of thought and activity to do our will our way. This is also how we end up in one mess or another day by day.

What happened, on the other hand, when King David waited on God?

“I waited patiently for the Lord to help me,
and he turned to me and heard my cry.”

Verse 1 tells us God turned to him and heard his cry. When we weep, God listens. When we are afraid, he knows. When we are distressed, he pays close attention.

“He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire.
He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.”

Verse 2 tells us God took action. He lifted David out of the pit of despair. Despair is about hopelessness and loss. When we wait on God, he provides hope for our hearts and a hand for our rescue. We find ourselves stuck in the mud in one moment, followed by a much better moment when God sets our feet on solid ground and steadies us as we walk in the direction of his purpose for us.

King David knew how to sing sad songs in minor keys. We have many to choose from in Psalms. Notice how many of his songs start sad and end glad. There is something about taking our pains and problems to God that reorients our perspective and renews our faith. Dirges become dances. Take a look at verses 3 through 5 for evidence.

Are you in a waiting season? Wait. Tell God all about your troubles. Know that he knows. Trust that he will guide and provide. Keep waiting until God says Go. Wait until hie puts a new song in your heart and a new dance in your feet. Listen for the music of heaven and step in time to God’s tune for your better future.

I will wait when it is time to wait, and I will sing a new song of praise to God who lifts my malaise.

Our Father, you are worth the wait. Your attention is comforting. Your provision is humbling. Your songs lift my heart. Your tune puts a spring in my step. May others see what you do for me and take courage that you will do it for them as well. May my waiting tell the story of your mercy and grace my words cannot bear. Amen.

Daily D – Deuteronomy 30:19-20

Deuteronomy 30:19, 20 “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 29:29

Deuteronomy 29:29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 26:16-19

Deuteronomy 26:16-19 “The Lord your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to him, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws—that you will listen to him. And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. He has declared that he will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations he has made and that you will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he promised.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 23:4-5

Deuteronomy 23:4, 5 “For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim to pronounce a curse on you. However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 17:16-20

Deuteronomy 17:16-20 The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the Lord has told you, “You are not to go back that way again.” He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.

When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. It is to be with him, and **he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left.** Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.
