Ezra 3:11-13  With praise and thanks, they sang this song to the Lord: “He is so good! His faithful love for Israel endures forever!” Then all the people gave a great shout, praising the Lord because the foundation of the Lord’s Temple had been laid. But many of the older priests, Levites, and other leaders who had seen the first Temple wept aloud when they saw the new Temple’s foundation. The others, however, were shouting for joy. The joyful shouting and weeping mingled together in a loud noise that could be heard far in the distance. (NLT)

The Good Ol’ Days were not as good as remembered, or else they would not have arrived at this place. The New Days were not as good as hoped because they made the same kinds of mistakes. History and current events have this in common: They are each less than ideal.

The one true thing in all generations is found in the song the people sang in verse 11:

He is so good!
His faithful love endures forever!

This song has echoed across history. It has always been true. It is true today. It is true forever.

We will never experience a perfect world this side of heaven. We can, however, work toward Eden. Genesis 1:31 tells us how God looked at all he had created and called it Very Good. Notice how he didn’t spread his arms wide and say, “Perfect!”

There is a perfect world coming, a place where our failures and foibles and foolishness are wiped away forever. What does this make possible?

To build a better world today, we start with the very best good we know. We will gather in worship with God’s family and together declare how good he is and how his love endures forever. Indeed, it is the one true enduring reality of heaven and earth.

Remember what made the Good Ol’ Days good.

Work toward building a Very Good world others will look back on and refer to as the Good Ol’ Days.

Sing God’s praises for who he is, and thank him for how he is perfectly consistent through every age. He is Good! He is Love! He endures forever!

I will sing God’s praises and pray with thanksgiving for who God is and for what he does.

Our Father, as Moses prayed in Psalm 90, “you have been our refuge in every generation.” You are Good! Your Love endures forever! Today is testimony of these truths as surely as the best days of history now past, as certainly as the paradise to come. Empower us to live fully today, wrapped in these never-ending truths, and join you in your renovating, renewing work. Amen.

Daily D – Isaiah 6:1-7

Isaiah 6:1-7 “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
