1 Chronicles 12:32  “From the tribe of Issachar, there were 200 leaders of the tribe with their relatives. All these men understood the signs of the times and knew the best course for Israel to take.” (NLT)

Proverbs 13:20
Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble. (NLT)

Become wise by walking with the wise; hang out with fools and watch your life fall to pieces. (MSG)

There are many smart people in this world, and too few who are wise. Learn facts and information from the smart ones. Learn life and leadership from the wise.

How often do you intentionally place yourself in the presence of wise people?

When you find yourself in a room full of wisdom, do you seek to impress these individuals, or do you choose to ask powerful questions and listen deeply?

Powerful questions and deep listening are accelerators for gaining wisdom. Do you have a question or two you enjoy asking the wise people you meet? One of my favorite questions is, “What are you reading?” This question led to a conversation that made time stand still one day years ago. An author, scholar, and world-class communicator sat across the table at lunch. He appeared fatigued. His interest level felt a little low.

The question above elicited an unhappy response related to some books he was reading for academic review. He then turned the question to me. When I told him what I was reading, he perked up and asked if I had read another book like the one I mentioned. He then said something that has stuck with me across all the intervening years: “That’s a book I wish I could read again for the first time.”

What a grand recommendation! The next several minutes were some of my all-time favorite moments.

A keystone habit of those who are determined to grow in wisdom is note-taking. Are you prepared to capture and keep the words of wisdom you hear? Do you routinely record your own best thoughts for further pondering?

An app I use is about to go up in price. This particular app has over 80,000 notes in it. These notes contain bits of wisdom collected from all kinds of sources since 2008. Artificial intelligence is coming to that app to help sift through the clutter and helpfully arrange the golden nuggets. Those golden nuggets are worth far more than the elevated subscription price.

Today is a good day to ask a powerful question, to listen deeply, and to capture what you learn. These habits repeated daily will make you one of the wise others seek out with powerful questions, deep listening, and attentive note-taking.

I will gather with the wise, ask powerful questions, listen deeply, and capture what I learn.

Our Father, bless me with opportunities to sit with the wise. Remind me to listen deeply. Give me powerful questions. Help me capture life-changing truth. Amen.

Daily D – Psalm 92:12-15

Psalm 92:12-15
The righteous thrive like a palm tree
and grow like a cedar tree in Lebanon.
Planted in the house of the LORD,
they thrive in the courts of our God.
They will still bear fruit in old age,
healthy and green,
to declare, “The LORD is just;
he is my rock,
and there is no unrighteousness in him.”

Daily D – Matthew 22:15-17

Matthew 22:15-17 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to trap him by what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are truthful and teach truthfully the way of God. You don’t care what anyone thinks nor do you show partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

Daily D – Psalm 90:12

Psalm 90:12 Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.

Daily D – Matthew 17:1-9

Matthew 17:1-9 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. He was transfigured in front of them, and his face shone like the sun; his clothes became as white as the light. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good for us to be here. If you want, I will set up three shelters here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown and were terrified.
Jesus came up, touched them, and said, “Get up; don’t be afraid.” When they looked up they saw no one except Jesus alone.
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”

Daily D – Matthew 15:34

Matthew 15:34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked them. “Seven,” they said, “and a few small fish.”
