Daily D – 1 Kings 10:23-25

1 Kings 10:23-25 So King Solomon became richer and wiser than any other king on earth. People from every nation came to consult him and to hear the wisdom God had given him. Year after year everyone who visited brought him gifts of silver and gold, clothing, weapons, spices, horses, and mules. (NLT)

When God says, “No other gods,” what does he include? Solomon’s gods included wealth, entertainment, sex, power, and even God’s gift of wisdom. He enjoyed being the smartest man in the room. He apparently thought he was smarter than God. Whereas his father was a God and God Alone leader, Solomon was a God and other gods leader.

This did not end well. First Kings 11 is one of the saddest chapters in the Bible. First Kings 10 begins well, but then takes an unwholesome turn as the Queen of Sheba and all her attendants began their trip home. As impressive as everything was to the Queen of Sheba in verses 1-13, Solomon apparently thought they were not quite as impressive as they could be.

He made a decisive shift from significant wisdom and wealth into extravagance in all things. He very nearly had it all. Then, just as it turns out in our day, it had him. Richest man in the world? Smartest man in the world? Got it. And so, so much more.

Extravagance cost him almost everything. It still demands too high a price.

I wonder if the Apostle Paul had Solomon in mind when he wrote to his protege Timothy:

“Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content,” (1 Timothy‬ ‭6‬:‭6‬-‭8‬ ‭NLT‬‬).

The greatest gain is not in what we horde but in how we use what God gives us to serve others in a manner that honors him and builds up those others.

Jesus said, “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!” (Matthew‬ ‭10‬:‭8‬ ‭NLT‬‬).

What will you give as freely as you have received?

Our Father, you have enriched each of us with something. Show us how to invest those good things into the lives of others so they may know your goodness, kindness, and generous benevolence. Empower us to live with open hands to freely receive and freely give. Amen.

Daily D – Deuteronomy 30:19-20

Daily D – Deuteronomy 26:16-19

Deuteronomy 26:16-19 “The Lord your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to him, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws—that you will listen to him. And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. He has declared that he will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations he has made and that you will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he promised.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 23:4-5

Deuteronomy 23:4, 5 “For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim to pronounce a curse on you. However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you.”

Daily D – Deuteronomy 17:16-20

Deuteronomy 17:16-20 The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the Lord has told you, “You are not to go back that way again.” He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.

When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. It is to be with him, and **he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left.** Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.
