Luke 6:46-49 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.” (NLT)

The most important lesson you will ever learn is how to hear and obey God. The most important lesson you will ever teach is how to hear and obey God.

This is not a new thought to those who read these morning musings regularly. It is a thought worth rethinking. Rethinking in this case means pondering anew and not dismissing in favor of something else.

Tim the ToolMan Taylor on the television show Home Improvement always thought he could improve on the tools his company provided him. His catchphrase was, along with a series of grunts, “More power!” Inevitably, this led to disaster.

Bing. And bing again.

Attempting to improve on God’s directions leads us farther away from the good life. It leads us into harm. It will, sooner or later, lead to destruction.

The God who created all the good things we enjoy also created them for us to enjoy. He is not holding back. The greatest beauty, the deepest wonder, the most intense sensations are his good gifts for our enjoyment. When we use these good gifts selfishly, we harm ourselves and others. We damage our relationships with God and with those we influence up close and at a distance.

God’s good gifts appropriately and lovingly received and enjoyed overflow into more beauty, wonder, and joyful intensity.

This does not mean we will never have problems if we hear and obey God. Other people have sin natures like us, and they use their freedom in a manner that bumps into our freedom often with uncomfortable consequences.

Hearing and obeying God is not nearly as hard as it may sound. When we read God’s words in the Bible, we hear God’s heart. We think his thoughts. We know his will and his ways.

Hearing and obeying God is a gift we give ourselves. It also blesses others.

Our Father, I want to know your will and your ways. Lead me ever-deeper into the practice of hearing and obeying you. I want to live according to your divine design. I want to enjoy the meaning and joy of a life lived in full expression of all you desire for me. Amen.

Daily D – Matthew 17:1-9

Matthew 17:1-9 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. He was transfigured in front of them, and his face shone like the sun; his clothes became as white as the light. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good for us to be here. If you want, I will set up three shelters here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown and were terrified.
Jesus came up, touched them, and said, “Get up; don’t be afraid.” When they looked up they saw no one except Jesus alone.
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”
