James 4:8  Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. (NIV)

Do you keep God at arm’s length? His invitation is this: “Come closer. Much closer.”

You may have heard at one time or another how taking one step toward God leads him to take two toward you. The sentiment is apt. It is also inaccurate. When you or I turn our hearts toward him, we discover he is closer than we imagined, more immediate than we could perceive, more loving, forgiving, and restoring than we dared hope.

Submission to him (verse 7) leads to exaltation by him (verse 10). Life’s highest height is ascended when we descend to our humblest low.

Verse 6 tells us he has more grace for us than we have yet experienced. He has more grace than we now, or ever, require. He longs to wrap his favor around us like a coat of many colors.

His invitation is simple and certain. It is trustworthy and true. It is life-giving and loving.

Move toward God in the confidence that he never steps back when we step forward.

Move toward God in the assurance that he anticipates your return with gifts too rich calculate.

Move toward God in the delight of finding all you ever longed for and so much more.

I will draw near to God.

Our Father, I will sing with Fanny Crosby:

I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith,
And be closer drawn to Thee.

Amen.

Daily D – Psalm 106:1-3

Psalm 106:1-3
Praise the LORD!
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good!
His faithful love endures forever.
Who can list the glorious miracles of the LORD?
Who can ever praise him enough?
There is joy for those who deal justly with others
and always do what is right.

Daily D – Psalm 103:1-5

Psalm 103:1-5
Let all that I am praise the LORD;
with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.
Let all that I am praise the LORD;
may I never forget the good things he does for me.
He forgives all my sins
and heals all my diseases.
He redeems me from death
and crowns me with love and tender mercies.
He fills my life with good things.
My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!

Daily D – Psalm 92:4

Psalm 92:4
“You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me!
I sing for joy because of what you have done.”

Daily D – Psalm 86:5-7

Psalm 86:5-7
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O LORD;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.

Daily D – Psalm 84:5-7

Psalm 84:5-7
And how blessed all those in whom you live,
whose lives become roads you travel;
They wind through lonesome valleys, come upon brooks,
discover cool springs and pools brimming with rain!
God-traveled, these roads curve up the mountain,
and at the last turn—Zion! God in full view!
