Psalm 97:10, 11
Let those who love the Lord hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Light shines on the righteous and joy on the upright in heart. (NIV)

God loves all who hate evil,
And those who love him he keeps safe,
Snatches them from the grip of the wicked.

Light-seeds are planted in the souls of God’s people,
Joy-seeds are planted in good heart-soil. (MSG)

Love God. Hate evil. Live in the light of God’s goodness. Harvest an abundance of joy!

These verses make my heart sing whenever I read them. This is the second time through the Psalms this year. These verses always make me pause and ponder. They bring fond memories to mind of my friend Jon Randles. Jon was an evangelist, pastor, college football chaplain, philosopher, and joke teller. He cut his hair once a year. If he had donned camel hair and eaten locusts, people would have thought John the Baptist was back.

Jon taught the teams at Texas Tech and Oklahoma and elsewhere it is not enough to say you love Jesus. You also have to hate sin. The recipe for a carnal Christian, as Avery Willis explained so well in his MasterLife discipleship toolkit, is to have one door open to Jesus and another to sin. The sin door needs to be closed, locked, sealed over, and wallpapered so you can’t find it.

Jon would teach this to those football players and then call out to them as he walked across campus, “Love God!” The football players would reply, “Hate sin!” Somebody in your life needs that shout-out. Of course, it might be you. Or me. Feel free to give me a shout-out the next time you see me. You might also take an index card and write, Love God on one side and Hate Sin on the other. Pull it out and look at it every time temptation comes your way.

The best part is what happens when we love God and hate sin. Our friend Eugene Peterson once again amplifies this text in the most delicious manner:

Light-seeds are planted in the souls of God’s people,
Joy-seeds are planted in good heart-soil.

Harvest time in this case is no longer a seasonal phenomenon. Instead, it is a daily delight. Light and Joy belong to those who throw open wide the door to God and his goodness, and who slam, lock, and seal the door to sin and evil.

As our friends in the group Delirious sang,

Open up the doors (Open up the doors)
And let the music play (Let the music play)
Let the streets resound with singing *

It’s Sunday, the first day of the week. It’s a day of worship and rest. It’s a day to gather with others who love Jesus and hate sin. It’s a day to sing resounding praise! It’s a day to harvest Light and Joy.

I will love God and sing his praises while slamming shut the door to evil.

Our Father, thank you for light and joy and a daily harvest of your goodness. Deliver us from evil. We sing your praise with deep passion and profound gratitude. Amen.

Daily D – Isaiah 65:1-2

Isaiah 65:1, 2
The Lord says, “I was ready to respond, but no one asked for help.
I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me.
I said, ‘Here I am, here I am!’
to a nation that did not call on my name.
All day long I opened my arms to a rebellious people.
But they follow their own evil paths
and their own crooked schemes.”

Daily D – Psalm 131

Psalm 131
Lord, my heart is not proud;
my eyes are not haughty.
I don’t concern myself with matters too great
or too awesome for me to grasp.
Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself,
like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk.
Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, put your hope in the Lord—
now and always.

Daily D – Isaiah 55:8-13

Isaiah 55:8-13
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

“The rain and snow come down from the heavens
and stay on the ground to water the earth.
They cause the grain to grow,
producing seed for the farmer
and bread for the hungry.
It is the same with my word.
I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
It will accomplish all I want it to,
and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
You will live in joy and peace.
The mountains and hills will burst into song,
and the trees of the field will clap their hands!
Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow.
Where nettles grew, myrtles will sprout up.
These events will bring great honor to the LORD’s name;
they will be an everlasting sign of his power and love.”

Daily D – Isaiah 50:4-5

Isaiah 50:4, 5 “The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom,
so that I know how to comfort the weary.
Morning by morning he wakens me
and opens my understanding to his will.
The Sovereign Lord has spoken to me,
and I have listened.
I have not rebelled or turned away.”

Daily D – Isaiah 48:17-18

Isaiah 48:17, 18 This is what the Lord says—
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the LORD your God,
who teaches you what is good for you
and leads you along the paths you should follow.
Oh, that you had listened to my commands!
Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river
and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea.”
