Matthew 5:13
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” (NIV)

“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.” (MSG)

“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth.”

Eugene Peterson had a way with words, didn’t he? The Message paraphrase often amplifies an idea in just the right way to help us see what we would otherwise miss.

A few days ago, our family was browsing the Williams Sonoma store in University Village in Fort Worth. This is a fun store for adults. There are cool appliances like pizza ovens and coffee grinders and espresso machines. There are also varieties of spices for different kinds of meals.

Looking at the different rubs and seasonings made me want to go to Costco to buy pounds of meat to grill or smoke. I could smell the combination of hardwood and charcoal, beef and salts and peppers.

God placed you and me here in this time at this place to bring out the best in others. We are “salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth.” We preserve goodness. We amplify beauty, wonder, and delight. People see how good God is when they encounter our lives.

With the conscious awareness of this role in our lives, how will you live differently today? What goodness will shake from your life into the incidents and accidents of this day? How will you add God-flavors to every conversation?

How will you be good for something today?

I will bring out the God-flavors of this earth.

Our Father, I want to be good for something today. Use my life to preserve goodness and to add flavor. Use me in whatever manner you see fit to bring out the best in others. Amen.

Daily D – Isaiah 6:1-7

Isaiah 6:1-7 “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
