Exodus 7:13  Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.

The New International Version (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2011), Ex 7:13.

Pride kills.

Again and again in these chapters where God takes on the gods of Egypt, the gods lose, God wins, and Pharaoh refuses to acknowledge the truth. Can’t you see him posing and singing Tom Petty lyrics?

Well, I won’t back down
No, I won’t back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won’t back down
No, I’ll stand my ground
Won’t be turned around
And I’ll keep this world from draggin’ me down
Gonna stand my ground
And I won’t back down

Ultimately, finally, Pharaoh did back down. Then, like Rocky on the mat, he got back up. Then his whole army drowned. So.

Here is a simple lesson. When God is right, and he always is, align yourself with him. You will win with him.

When God is right, and he always is, and you oppose him, you will always lose. Don’t be that guy.

This sounds harsh to those who have somehow come to believe that whatever they want is what God wants for them. What God wants for us is better than what we want for ourselves. Always.

Television and movies tell us the highest goal in life is to be happy. This is a false narrative. We work for the weekend and discover it does not satisfy us ultimately. Nothing we try outside of God’s good gifts and his perfect purpose can provide true and lasting satisfaction.

Satan’s favorite lie is, “You can have it your way, any way you want it.” This is partially true. He simply leaves out the consequences inviolably fixed to self-centered actions.

True and lasting satisfaction comes from a deep and abiding walk with God. Jesus talks about this in John 15. He says in verse 17, “This is my command: Love each other.” Life was never intended to be concentered all in ourselves like a black hole consuming everything into its darkness.

Life is meant for us to look out not only for our own interests but also for the interests of others (Philippians 2:4). Life’s best is sharing the deep bonds of love that seek the highest good for others. If we want our needs and desires met most fully and completely, we will meet the needs and desires of those we know most closely.

Pride kills. God’s love gives life meaning and purpose. Choose love. Choose life.

I will choose love and life, meaning and purpose.

Our Father, please deliver me from prideful desires all about me. Empower me instead with your love that seeks the highest good for others. Immerse my reasoning in your love. Shape my words by your love. Direct my actions by your love. Make me contagious with your love. I want to live a life of purposeful and productive expression of your loving nature. Amen.

Psalm 141:3, 4
“Take control of what I say, O LORD,
and guard my lips.
Don’t let me drift toward evil
or take part in acts of wickedness.
Don’t let me share in the delicacies
of those who do wrong.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 32:38-41

Jeremiah 32:38-41 “They will be my people, and I will be their God. And I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship me forever, for their own good and for the good of all their descendants. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good for them. I will put a desire in their hearts to worship me, and they will never leave me. I will find joy doing good for them and will faithfully and wholeheartedly replant them in this land.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 29:11-14

Jeremiah 29:11-14 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. I will be found by you,” says the Lord. “I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and will bring you home again to your own land.”

Daily D – Psalm 138:1-3

Psalm 138:1-3
“I give you thanks, O LORD, with all my heart;
I will sing your praises before the gods.
I bow before your holy Temple as I worship.
I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness;
for your promises are backed by all the honor of your name.
As soon as I pray, you answer me;
you encourage me by giving me strength.”

Daily D – Jeremiah 23:18

Jeremiah 23:18 “Have any of these prophets been in the Lord’s presence to hear what he is really saying? Has even one of them cared enough to listen?”
