Daily D – Psalm 143:8

Let me experience your faithful love in the morning, for I trust in you. Reveal to me the way I should Go because I appeal to you.
PSALM 143:8 (CSB)

—————————————————————————

Anger and irritation lurk around the edges of my morning. I rested well. The first cup of coffee was good. So far, so good for a Wednesday. It was what happened last night that still rubs me the wrong way.

Yesterday was a good day. I got to coach three cohorts of pastors from across the USA. Our team met with another group of pastors in our offices at lunch. They were so much fun to work with.

Today I will meet with more pastors and directors of missions like me from across America. It will be a good day. Here’s where the irritability enters the picture.

I was supposed to board a flight to Detroit tonight and lead training with the Michigan Baptist Convention tomorrow. However, when I was checking in for my flight, a new popup I had not seen before said I could not check in for my flight if I had been around someone who tested positive for COVID in the last ten days or so.

My bride had COVID last week.

Both of us are doubly vaccinated and both of us plan to get the booster shot when it is available. My wife’s case did not require hospitalization, thankfully. I tested negative for COVID and have had no symptoms, no fever, no nothing while she was sick or since her recovery.

So, I called American Airlines and explained the situation. I was looking for wiggle room that would allow me to fly. The representative was pleasant and kind and asked me what the new popup instructions said. I told her. She said that it sounds like I should not fly. (Sigh)

The team we are working with in Michigan is at a crucial turn in the process. I really wanted to be there to help guide them toward God’s special future for their state. Not gonna happen.

So, I have an as-yet-unplanned day tomorrow. By the time I have my second cup of coffee this morning, I will turn the corner and seek answers to one of my favorite fog-cutting questions: What does this make possible?

Already several to-do list items come to mind. This problem provides new opportunities to resolve some issues simmering on the back burner and awaiting my stirring spoon.

I went to bed last night praying about the possibilities. This morning I re-read Psalm 143 including verse 8 above. This verse has shaped my daily prayers for three decades. The New International Version from 1984 puts it this way:

Let the morning bring word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.

Life is full of detours, Yield signs, and Stop signs. Last night’s news was a STOP sign. Since I cannot go the way I thought I was going, which way should I go? Should I turn right or left since I cannot go straight? Right now I do not know. That’s why I ask our Father in heaven which way I should go.

Now that I think about it, this detour could be a great adventure. This could be setting me up to leave on vacation next weekend with some details marked DONE that would have lingered for my return otherwise. My load just might get lighter because of this unplanned day.

What would you do with an unplanned day?

What will you do with this day?

Here is how to pray: Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.

—————————————————————————

I will seek God’s direction and enjoy the revised journey.

—————————————————————————

Our Father, you have complete freedom to interrupt my plans any time. Your plans are better than mine. Your purpose prevails. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. Amen.

Daily D – Genesis 4:6-7

Genesis 4:6, 7 “Why are you so angry?” the Lord asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”

Daily D – Genesis 2:7

Genesis 2:7 Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.

Daily D – Mark 6:30-32

Mark 6:30-32 The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone.

Daily D – Mark 9:30-31

Mark 9:30, 31 Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn’t want anyone to know he was there, for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples and teach them. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies. He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the dead.”

Daily D – John 17:4

John 17:4 “I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do.”
