Daily D – Mark 1:35-38
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he got up, went out, and made his way to a deserted place; and there he was praying. Simon and his companions searched for him, and when they found him they said, “Everyone is looking for you.” And he said to them, “Let’s go to the neighboring villages so that I may preach there too. This is why I have come.”
MARK 1:35-38 (CSB)
Why are you here? What is your purpose in life, your mission?
Have you ever enjoyed success that brought you increasing attention that was not your ultimate focus?
Take a look at a few verses above today’s text. Start at verse 29 and read through verse 37. Verses 32-34 contain several important facts.
- It was evening.
- The sun had set.
- They brought to him all those who were sick and demon-possessed.
- The whole town was assembled at the door.
- Jesus healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons.
Jesus worked all night long. He healed many people. In spite of a long day of teaching and healing (verses 21-34), Jesus got up “very early in the morning, while it was still dark.” He “made his way to a deserted place; and there he was praying,” (verse 35).
You get the idea that Jesus could have set up shop there in Capernaum and healed all day and night every day. Jesus did not come to live his life as a small-town doctor, as important a position as that is. His mission involved everyone everywhere. He had places to go, people to see, things to do.
Productivity apart from purpose diminishes contribution.
Years ago, I heard someone talk about the folly of “persisting in the unproductive.” Jesus was productive in Capernaum. He could have been productive there for quite some time. Limit Jesus to Capernaum, however, and he would never make it to Jerusalem, to the cross, to the grave, to the resurrection, and to the ascension.
Limit Jesus to Capernaum and he would not have fulfilled his mission “to seek and to save the lost,” (Luke 19:10).
Limit Jesus to Capernaum and we would not know our commission to “make disciples of all nations,” (Matthew 28:19).
Why are you here? What is your purpose in life, your mission? If you don’t know, there are wise guides who can help you gain clarity. If you do know, do not allow anything to distract you toward becoming more and more productive in something other than what matters most.

Our Father, you have a mission for each of us to accomplish. We get to join you in your mission. We have the unique privilege of knowing and experiencing you while inviting others to join in this journey. We get to join you in making this world a better place for everyone everywhere. You have a specific focus for each of us. Give us ever-greater clarity regarding what that purpose is. Protect us from the temptation to live someone else’s mission. Amen.
