Daily D – John 5:8-9

“Get up,” Jesus told him, “pick up your mat and walk.” Instantly the man got well, picked up his mat, and started to walk. Now that day was the Sabbath, . . .
JOHN 5:8-9 (CSB)

—————————————————————————

Some people see guidelines as laws. Others see laws as guidelines. The truly perceptive understand the deeper meaning and purpose of both guidelines and laws along with which are just and which are unnecessary redundancy.

The Tradition of the Elders added thirty-nine categories of work that were to be avoided on the Sabbath. Number thirty-nine was about carrying a load from one dwelling to another. This amplified God’s command to rest on the Sabbath found in Exodus 20:8-11.

So Jesus, in fact, asked this man to break the rules, right? The commandment of God was about ceasing from labor for financial gain. The Tradition of the Elders was a sort of fence of thirty-nine rails to prevent anyone from getting close to breaking the actual commandment. The Tradition became more important than the Law, a point Jesus made again and again. The Tradition missed the heart of the Law.

In other words, some rules are meant to be broken. Unjust laws may be justly ignored or abrogated.

Do not, however, miss the miracle. Jesus told the man, “Get up, pick up your mat and walk.” Do you remember Jesus’ question from verse 6? “Do you want to get well?” Do you remember the tepid response the man offered in verse 7? Here we see the man’s answer by his actions rather than hearing it with his words. “Instantly the man got well, picked up his mat, and started to walk,” (verse 9).

The secret to living with wisdom and power is hearing Jesus and doing what he says.

Jesus said,

1. Get up
2. Pick up your mat
3. Walk

The man

1. Got up
2. Picked up his mat
3. Walked

What is Jesus saying to you today?

Hint: He speaks to those who learn how to listen to his voice. The single most important thing we can ever learn is how to hear Jesus. Lesson number one is asking him to speak to your heart.

  • Ask him to give you his directions regarding a decision you need to make.
  • Ask him to give you guidance regarding a direction you should take.
  • Ask him to give you wisdom, insight, and understanding on a particular matter where you currently lack clarity.

When you hear what he says, do what he says. This is the way of wisdom. This is the medium of miracles.

You can live with wisdom and power, or you can sit around in your suffering circumstances. Wisdom and power are much more exhilarating.

I will live with wisdom and power by hearing and obeying Jesus.

Our Father, give me ears to hear what you are saying to me now and moment by moment throughout the day. Show me the way I should go, for to you I Iift up my soul. Amen.

Daily D – Isaiah 65:1-2

Isaiah 65:1, 2
The Lord says, “I was ready to respond, but no one asked for help.
I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me.
I said, ‘Here I am, here I am!’
to a nation that did not call on my name.
All day long I opened my arms to a rebellious people.
But they follow their own evil paths
and their own crooked schemes.”

Daily D – Psalm 131

Psalm 131
Lord, my heart is not proud;
my eyes are not haughty.
I don’t concern myself with matters too great
or too awesome for me to grasp.
Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself,
like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk.
Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, put your hope in the Lord—
now and always.

Daily D – Isaiah 55:8-13

Isaiah 55:8-13
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

“The rain and snow come down from the heavens
and stay on the ground to water the earth.
They cause the grain to grow,
producing seed for the farmer
and bread for the hungry.
It is the same with my word.
I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
It will accomplish all I want it to,
and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
You will live in joy and peace.
The mountains and hills will burst into song,
and the trees of the field will clap their hands!
Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow.
Where nettles grew, myrtles will sprout up.
These events will bring great honor to the LORD’s name;
they will be an everlasting sign of his power and love.”

Daily D – Isaiah 50:4-5

Isaiah 50:4, 5 “The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom,
so that I know how to comfort the weary.
Morning by morning he wakens me
and opens my understanding to his will.
The Sovereign Lord has spoken to me,
and I have listened.
I have not rebelled or turned away.”

Daily D – Isaiah 48:17-18

Isaiah 48:17, 18 This is what the Lord says—
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the LORD your God,
who teaches you what is good for you
and leads you along the paths you should follow.
Oh, that you had listened to my commands!
Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river
and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea.”
